Engineering role

Full-Stack Engineer

Build the AI layer into products that already have users, with the client's engineers in the loop. Reliability first, clean code the client can keep, and features instrumented so we can show what moved.

About the role

What this job actually is.

We do not rebuild products from scratch. We build on top of what a client already runs, which means reading an unfamiliar codebase, respecting its conventions, and leaving it better than we found it.

You will own the implementation of the features our designers and AI engineers shape, from the API route to the interface that calls it. You will work inside the client's repository, next to their team, so the knowledge stays with them when we leave.

The bar is production. Guardrails, fallbacks, tests and instrumentation are part of the feature, not a later phase.

What you'll do

The work you will own.

A typical engagement asks for all of this. Some weeks lean harder on one part than another.

  1. 01Implement AI features on top of a client's existing product, in their codebase and their deployment setup.
  2. 02Read and understand an unfamiliar codebase quickly, then write code that fits its patterns.
  3. 03Integrate model APIs with streaming, retries, rate limits, timeouts and graceful fallbacks.
  4. 04Build the interface layer too: the loading, error and review states that make an AI feature feel trustworthy.
  5. 05Add tracking and logging so every feature we ship can be measured against the metric it was meant to move.
  6. 06Pair with the client's engineers, review their pull requests and have them review yours.
  7. 07Write the handover notes and documentation that let the client run the feature without us.
  8. 08Push back when a plan is fragile, and propose the simpler thing that will hold up in production.
What you bring

The bar for this role.

Don't meet every line? Apply anyway. We hire for judgment over a checklist.

Must have

  • 5 or more years building production web applications, with full-stack features you shipped and maintained.
  • Strong TypeScript and React. Next.js experience is a strong plus.
  • Comfortable across the stack: API design, relational databases, background jobs and the UI on top.
  • Experience integrating third party APIs, including error handling, retries and rate limits.
  • You write tests, and you think about failure modes before they happen.
  • Clear written English and the habit of explaining your decisions in pull requests.

Nice to have

  • You have shipped a feature built on a model API such as OpenAI or Anthropic to real users.
  • Experience with retrieval, embeddings or vector search.
  • Familiarity with Vercel, serverless functions and edge runtimes.
  • You have worked as a contractor or consultant inside someone else's codebase.
Tools you'll use
  • TypeScript
  • React and Next.js
  • Node.js
  • PostgreSQL
  • Vercel
  • OpenAI and Anthropic APIs
Your first 90 days

How you will ramp up.

A clear path from joining to leading, with a senior partner beside you the whole way.

  1. First 30 days

    Ship inside a client codebase

Set up on an active engagement, learn our review habits, and ship your first reviewed pull request into a client product.

  2. By day 60

    Own a feature

Take one AI feature from design handoff to production, including tests, fallbacks and the tracking that measures it.

  3. By day 90

    Lead the build

Lead the engineering side of an engagement: plan the work, pair with the client's team and own the handover.

How to apply

Tell us what you've shipped.

If you're interested in joining our team, send a message to careers@uplayer.agency.

What to include
  • The role you are applying for, or the role you think we are missing.
  • Links to work you shipped, and what your part in it was.
  • A few lines on a time you decided not to build something, and why that was the right call.

We read every application.
